A critical feature of episodic memory is the ability to discriminate between similar, but distinct, experiences. Storing similar memory representations in a distinct, non-overlapping fashion is thought to depend on a pattern separation (PS) process that is attributed to the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) and associated brain regions, such as the perirhinal cortex. I aim to elucidate whether PS in the hippocampus causally depends on activity in the perirhinal cortex and which cellular and molecular mechanisms support this process.
